We investigated the incidence of infections in very low birth weight(VLBW)infants born in the year 2010 using a
questionnaire survey for training institutes for perinatal neonatologists of Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal
Medicine. The results of this survey were compared with a previous similar survey of VLBW infants born in 2000. Of the
4,404 VLBW infants admitted to the 161 institutes which replied to the survey, 684 cases(15.5%)of infection were
identified. This incidence was greater than that measured in 2000. The percentages of pneumonia, sepsis, and bloodstream
infections were increased slightly, whereas MRSA and pseudomonas infections were decreased. This survey
suggests that the incidence of infections in VLBW infants has been increased with the improved survival rate of more
immature infants. However, recent control of multi-drug-resistant bacteria has had significant effects on the infection rate
in VLBW infants. |
