Approximately 80% of superior vena cava flow(SVC flow)is estimated to be returning from the brain in infants. We measured SVC flow by the method of Evans using echocardiograph in the asphyxiated neonates and studied the relationship between SVC flow and short term prognosis. The criteria for eligibility were identical in perinatal asphyxia as evidenced by fetal distress and Apgar score of 7 or less at 1-minutes. SVC flows were higher in the infant with poor outcome than those of good outcome within 5hrs after birth. We speculated that autoregulation of brain circulation was disturbed in the infants with severely asphyxiated neonates.
